Several months ago I was introduced to Jill of Modern Cupcake via Kim of The TomKat Studio. She has launched an online cupcake boutique, and I am thrilled to share with you a wonderful interview I recently conducted with her. The photos are making me want to fly to Arizona for some of her cupcakes right about now--simply beautiful!
{Question} How did you come to decide to launch Modern Cupcake?
I'm an Interior Designer & have owned my own design business for 6+ years. The economy began to impact my design business and so I made the decision to try something new! I have an appreciation for truly good food & a passion for cooking/baking! I saw there was a need for fresh..sweet..delish cupcakes in the East Valley and so Modern Cupcake was born!
{Question} Please tell us a bit about how you got started, and you got your business off the ground!
I began sharing my idea with friends/family & then before I knew it, people started to place orders! A beautiful & fabulous tasting product, word-of-mouth & Facebook have been the driving forces behind Modern Cupcake.
{Question} What is Modern Cupcake? What are your top-selling treats, and who can purchase your yummy delights?
Modern Cupcake is a web-based boutique cupcakery. We pride ourselves in baking perfectly scrumptious cupcakes! We are local which means Phoenix/Scottsdale & surrounding areas can purchase Modern cupcakes at this time. All of our cupcakes are delivered. We offer complimentary delivery to Chandler/Gilbert.
Our top-selling cupcakes are our Lemon/Raspberry with Lemon Cream Cheese Icing, Red Velvets & our Chocolate Velvet with Cream Cheese Icing!
{Question} What are your goals for Modern Cupcake in 2011?
Our 2011 goal for Modern Cupcake is to began shipping nationally! We've had dozens of inquiries re: shipping.
{Question} Let's Get To Know You! Please tell us your favorite cupcake flavor, favorite frosting, a memorable order you fulfilled since the launch of your business, and your favorite hobbies and personal style, outside of your business!
-While all of our cupcakes taste divine... I'd have to say it's a toss up between our Red Velvet with Cream Cheese Icing & our Mayan Chocolate with Cinnamon Buttercream Icing!
-A memorable order...hmmm...well...I have several but this one quickly comes to mind. A client had ordered some Lemon/Raspberry for a birthday celebration at a local restaurant. Come to find out, the chef (celebrity chef) joined them at their table and ate a Modern Cupcake. His response to the Modern Cupcake was "compliments to the pastry chef". Coming from that chef...I had a skip in my step & a smile on my face for an entire week!
-About Me: Anyone that knows me, knows that I {LOVE} to travel!!! I {LOVE} the French language and strive to speak it fluently one day. I {LOVE} to photograph architecture & nature. I've been known to pick up a paint brush here & there...contemporary art & acrylics are my fav. I {LOVE} wearing red shoes & doses of animal print. I secretly have a stationery & invitation fetish...okay...it's no longer a secret!
{Question} For the DIY moms at home....any tips to make their cupcakes picture-perfect?
I prefer to use brown liners for all of our cupcakes. It gives them a more uniform look. When baking, be sure to not overmix the batter & let the cupcakes cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before placing them on a cooling rack. Depending on when you consume your tasty treats, store your cupcakes at room temperature in an air tight container or freeze. Never refrigerate!
