Le Papier Studio: Meet Vana Chupp {Giveaway, Interview & Book Review}

Vana Chupp, designer and creator of Le Papier Studio, is a brilliantly talented artist and entrepenuer. I simply adore silhouette art, so it is no surprise I have a special place in my heart for her work!

Today I have the great honor and privilege of featuring a wonderful interview I recently conducted with Vana, as well as a mini book review. Vana has generously offered one lucky reader an autographed copy of her book, Silhouette Art! {Details at the end of the post.}

Have you heard of the book Silhouette Art? Maybe you have seen it at your local Paper Source, or featured online? I am head over heels for this wonderful book that Vana created, and generously sent me a copy of to review.

My mini book review of Silhouette Art:

The presentation is beautiful. The textured cover literally makes the silhouette "pop", and as you open and unfold, you will find that Silouhette Art is like a pop-up book for grown-ups.

The full-page vellum pouch features a cardstock frame for your silhouette artwork {perfectly sealed with a silhouette sticker, of course}.

A stunning black booklet inside the left flap features the most stunning cover (somehow the gorgeous font gives you both a vintage and modern look all at once).

Inside this booklet, Vana teaches you how to create your own hand crafted silhouette.

It teaches you step by step, is easy to follow, with a resource guide on the back page {thank you!} of where to get all the tools to create your own "heirloom art".

From paperweights to wrapping paper, Vana shows you not only how to create a hand crafted silhouette, but also creative ways to use and display it.

Just when you thought the adventures in silhouette design were over, you realize that behind this black booklet is a thick stack of archival paper (24 sheets, to be exact), as well as more than a dozen silhouette templates--from a daschund to an antique chair.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book--creative, stunning presentation, and loads of ideas and tools to get started designing my own silhouette art (I think I will start with our pup Henry). Many thanks Vana, for not only giving me this extraordinary gift, but allowing me to share my review of it as well.

Now for a lovely chat with Vana...

{Question} Tell us a little bit about what inspired you to launch your own business, Le Papier Studio, and how you turned that vision into a reality.

My son Nikolas was the inspiration and the reason I started my own business in 2008. I wanted to find an outlet that would allow me to create and be home with him at the same time. I started small and grew my business organically. I started selling things I loved making and soon I discovered there was a market for it. Selling on Etsy helped me be part of a crafty community as well as develop my niche, specialty. As things progressed, so did the business. In 2009 I opened my e-commerse website offering an easier shopping experience for my customers.

 {Question} You have a background in architecture. How has that design background helped you with Le Papier Studio the most?

Being professionally trained as an architect, I have always had an eye for design and artistic things that go together. When it came to using the softwares I currently use for all my illustration work, Architecture school had done all the work for me. So I felt I was ahead in the game.

 {Question} As you can tell, I am one who personally adores silhouettes. When did your passion for silhouette art first begin?

I discovered my love for silhouettes when my son was born. Documenting my son's milestones by capturing his personality, emotion, playfulness and essence, I began using silhouettes to tell my own life story. It's a love story - continuing to blossom, with Nikolas as my muse. Coming full circle, I was able to combine my passion and artistic experience and share it all with my lovely customers.

 {Question} I was thrilled with the book you recently released {and reviewed in this feature}, in particular because it teaches others how to do a craft you love and have made a business out of. What prompted you to share your passion with others by creating this book? What do you hope will come from it?

When Chronicle Books approached me to write this book, I jumped to the opportunity. I wanted the book to be a simple yet elegant DIY format which can teach someone the basics of making a silhouette but also a tool so to speak for crafty people. My intention behind the book was simply to give silhouette lovers the opportunity to create modern heirlooms with very little skills required.

{Question} Any hints at new products to come in 2011 at Le Papier Studio?

We are always looking for ways to expand the brand whether it is new product or designs or even new collaborations with fellow artisans. I am so excited to say that we are currently working on some great products that will make their debut later in the year - possibly early spring. Stay tuned!

 {Question} Many of our readers are starting their own businesses out of their creative passion, and often ask me where and how to begin. What advice would you have to offer them?

The best advise I was given it to JUST DO IT! We live in a country where the handmade community and the appreciation for handmade goods is growing rapidly. I still follow a handful of blogs that focus on ways to promote and run small businesses. Don't be afraid to ask questions! You will be surprised how genuine and ready to help people are. If you have any questions about starting your own business, don't hesitate to email me (vana@lepapierstudio.com). I'd be happy to help you!

{Question} Let's get to know you a little better with a few quick fun questions!

Favorite Color: I don't think I have one in particular. I do love white, grey and navy and yellow.

Favorite Illustrator: Sarah Jane Wright. I discovered Sarah when I first started selling on Etsy and besides being good friends, I am very fond of her illustration style.

Favorite places to shop online: I am officially addicted to JCrew (for clothing and accessories) and Etsy for anything handmade.

{Question} Last question: Do you have any suggestions for unique ways to use your new book? Things that may not have come to mind initially, but that your readers have shared with you or things you have discovered on your own?

Almost everyone of my customers has purchased the book to give as a gift to a crafty friend or family member. I think it will be fun to use it as part of a craft activity at holidays when all the family is in town. May be you all have some suggestions? Do share them. I'd love to know.

Queen Of Tarts Cakes: Meet Angela {Exclusive Interview}

Angela of Queen of Tarts Cakes designs and decorates beautiful cakes and cookies. While she is based in Southern California, she ships her cookies nationwide, and her edible wafers worldwide!

I had the pleasure of getting to know Angela through Kim of The TomKat Studio during our collaboration on the Wizard of Oz Party--Angela created those darling Dorothy silhouette and gingham cookies!

{design by The TomKat Studio; Silhouette by Pen N' Paper Flowers}

Later I worked with Angela on the cookies for The Nutcracker Suite Ballet {Signature Party} dessert table, and she knocked my socks off--just gorgeous!!! I gave her a daunting task of creating a "bundt cake" cookie based on detailed descriptions, as well as a cupcake cookie based on a photograph of a real cupcake--she took these ideas and custom created something far more lovely than I ever could have imagined--her work shows off her incredible attention to detail. These cookies are just stunning and I adore the perfect colors she used--LOVE!

Today I have the pleasure of featuring a wonderful interview I recently conducted with Angela. I hope you enjoy learning about this artist and entrepreneur.

{Question} Please tell us about Queen Of Tarts Cakes, from conception of the idea to where you are today!

I have always loved beautiful desserts and frequently poured over Martha Stewart Living for the lovely DIY images on cakes and cookies. Everything looked so put together and perfect. I have been a fashion designer my entire life from college in design school in New York, up to the moment I started my Queen of Tarts Cakes business. I had just left BCBG where I was Head Designer for 3 years, where I designed their dresses and sportswear and was I home watching my son. At the same time, he needed a birthday cake for his upcoming 1st birthday and I could not find an alligator cake for his zoo themed party that cost less than $500 from any of the local bakeries, so I made it myself. After that, I was hooked.

I signed up for Wilton decorating classes and then attended Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School in Pasadena for a few more cake classes. Since then, I have also studied sugar flowers with Jacqueline Butler of Petalsweet Cakes in San Diego, and have an upcoming sugar flower class with Ron Ben-Israel at Minette Rushing’s Savannah Custom Cakes bakery in GA in March. I’m not able to attend school fulltime since since it conflicts with my schedule as a mom, so I take classes that last a few days and choose amazing instructors such as Ron and Jacqueline.

{Question} We would love to learn more about you! Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I always make my son my first priority. He knows his mom bakes a lot, but it never affects my time with him since he’s in school during the day when I am working. I found a local commercial kitchen that I rent from part time for baking. I do the edible image graphics late at night from my home computer after he goes to sleep. Usually I have about 10-15 orders going at once since I ship edible images worldwide, and the cookies are a nationwide business.

 I enjoy doing cakes and cupcakes although I reach an extremely small audience since those are for local delivery in Los Angeles, only. There is no store front. I get all of my business through social media sites such as Facebook or my blog, and 95% of my customers are outside of the Los Angeles area.

{Question} What are your goals for Queen of Tarts Cakes in 2011, and what steps do you plan to take to achieve them?

My edible image collections are going to expand and I plan on introducing new selling channels to reach a broader international audience. I will be selling on Amazon.com soon, and my website will hopefully be up in the next two months. I will always be baking and shipping, however. It’s so much fun!

{Question} What are your favorites sources of inspiration for your work?

Fashion, vintage fabrics and prints and vintage ephemera. I love whimsical nostalgic images that remind me of childhood, such as the Baby Rummy and Old Maid card edible images in my Etsy shop. Cookies need to look so pretty that you remember them long after they are gone. They help build cherished childhood memories.

{Question} Can you give us any hints or previews of new designs or products to come from you in the coming months? We would love to hear about them!

I am working further at really addressing the DIY home baking industry with my products, whether they are sugar flower cake toppers for DIY wedding cakes, or edible images people can use at home on their cookies and cupcakes. Brides give my edible images to their caterers to use when baking wedding favor cookies if they don’t buy the cookies from me. Martha Stewart built her empire on the DIY crowd and home baking is part of that. It’s fun being an artist but I do also watch the bottom line and sales are a huge part of that.

Many thanks to Angela for sharing with us such insight, and lovely images of your edible art!

                                                     {gift jars found here}

 I have been thinking of how many creative ways I could use my twine from The Twinery for "Valen-twine's Day"--and you will see in these images some perfect ideas!!!!

                              {banner by Glory of Glorious Treats}

{Question}  Please tell us a bit about The Twinery--from conception of the idea to where you are today.

 The Twinery all started because of a personal need...a personal preference, really. I had a small business and I used baker's twine and ribbons to tie up my products. My products were colorful...bold...vibrant...and often found itself into the hands of little ones and I wanted the packaging to be just as creative and colorful and attractive. I loved the idea and concept of baker's twine...it's fun, it's nostalgic, it's reminiscent of simplicity with a twist of fabulous!

After much searching and researching on various websites, forums and even at local crafting get togethers, I realized that others were wanting the same thing I did - happy, fresh colorful string to tie up their baked goods, to use on their scrapbook pages, to use in their product packaging, to use on their party goods, brides wanted it to use on their wedding invitations, boutiques wanted to offer it to their clients and on and on the list went. We were all searching and coming up empty handed. There was baker's twine on the market...but nothing like I wanted...nothing like the crafters I talked to were looking for. It took many, many months of planning, saving, designing and waiting...did I mention lots of saving and planning?! It was no small feat, but I was able to create a type of baker's twine that everyone was searching for...and I'm so proud of the way things came together and I'm so ecstatic that so many fans and customers love this silly string as much as I do!

                                    {Necklace by Emily Leiphart}

{Question} We would love to learn a bit more about you! Please tell us about yourself.

 I'm a wife and a mom - the first two most important "jobs" in my life! I have the most supporting and loving husband anyone could ask for...he even helps me package up twine orders! My two children are my pride & joy - both mommy's little helpers - they are smart, funny and remind me everyday how blessed I am that they are in my life! I was born in the Chicago area and spent most of my young childhood there {it holds a special place in my heart}...then my family moved to a small town in Wisconsin right near Milwaukee and Madison and I spent the rest of my childhood days, high school and even college years and beyond there - I had a wonderful childhood...it was full laughter, happy memories and creativity! I think that's what drove me to getting a degree in Early Childhood Education and teaching preschool for a number of years before taking the plunge into the handmade crafting market! Creativity was instilled in me at such a young age...I remember watching my mom sew, paint, draw, make and bake...it was inspiring and I knew I wanted to be just like that!

                                 {Card by Stephanie}

{Question} I am a HUGE fan of your gorgeous twine. I know first-hand that it is incredibly versatile--I love it for party-favor packaging, dessert tables, gift wrap...what are your favorite uses of your twine?

Personally I LOVE using it with my paper crafts - stringing banners, tying up gift tags...but I also love packaging up baked goodies and treats with it {I think through this whole thing I've discovered that "packaging is my passion"!

                                        {wrapping by Ivona}

{Question} Your color range is spectacular! Are there any new colors or products you plan to introduce in 2011? Any hints you can share with us?

There are many new colors on the horizon - we just released 3 new colors of baker's twine in January: Blossom - which is a light baby pink & white twine, Honeydew - which is a light chartreuse green & white twine {it's the same color as the inside of a honeydew melon...thus, the name} and Charcoal - it's a simple black & white twine but it makes a bold statement!

But...we're not stopping there. We have some new colors being created and can't wait to share them with everyone soon...no hints on colors...but I think they are going to be HUGE hits with the brides, crafters, stationers, bakers and everyone else in between! We also have some other fun products to introduce this year...think packaging...paper goods...and more....all created to match our baker's twine colors!

                                      {place setting and tag by Kristy}

{Question} What are your goals for 2011 for The Twinery, and what steps have you already taken to achieve them?

My goals for The Twinery this year are:

1.Update and professionalize our logo - I'm so excited to be working with a fabulous graphic designer and cannot wait to reveal our new look soon!

2. Blog and Website Makeover - this goes hand in hand with becoming more professional...I have so many ideas and new products that I'd like to add this year and I'm excited to be working with someone who will make that all happen!

3. Add new products - this is an exciting part of my 'every day' right now...the planning, the preparing, etc...but no hints!

                                      {wrapped baked goods by Emily Leiphart}

I'm excited of what The Twinery has become in the short time it's been "open" (we officially launched in July 2010) and thrilled to think where The Twinery is heading in 2011 and beyond! I have a fabulous design team of crafters who are the beacon of creativity and share wonderful projects with The Twinery's fans, blog readers & customers...I'm so excited to see what they have in store for us this year too...I know no one will be disappointed!

Meet Courtney of Courtney Vickers Photography {Exclusive Interview}

Swoon! The first time I discovered Courtney Vickers Photography via Kori of Paper & Pigtails, I instantly fell in love with her work.

Courtney is an incredibly talented photographer, highly skilled and has a deep passion for her work. She knows how to capture the essence of a child, and it brings me great joy to share her wonderful interview with you!

{Question}Tell us a bit about Courtney Vickers Photography--what inspired you to start your business?

I've been a natural light, on location photographer in the Tampa area for 5 years. I started child and family photography after a horrible experience at a mall chain photography studio. I left feeling so disappointed in the pictures. They had captured what my son looked like, but not who he really was.

                                       {banner by Paper & Pigtails}

Plus, several of the images were out of focus and with a background in arts and photography it really upset me. I remember thinking "I could have done better than this with my own supplies in my living room." It was then that I realized that there was a market for a higher end experience.

I currently shoot mostly in Florida, but I am happy to have been able to travel a bit as well, and am always open to sessions in new places.

{Question} We would love to hear a bit about your background, and how you got interested in photography in the first place.

 I took several classes in photography in high school and college. I liked it and it was great for learning the basics, but I never felt very inspired shooting inanimate objects and nature and I kind of only did it as a hobby. It did arm me with the knowledge about how to use my camera, though, so when I started with children that was a learning curve I had mostly down. Of course, there's still a lot to learn when you're talking about a toddler who's hell bent on getting away from you as fast as possible, and anxious first time mom and a skeptical dad thrown into the mix. It's been a joyous growing experience and I am so blessed to have come to have this rewarding career.

{Question} Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I am first and foremost so so so happily married and completely in awe of my 2 superhero little boys. Grady is 5 and he's such a smart cookie. He's constantly challenging me to be a better person and a phenomenal parent. He's the reason I do what I do, because without that first experience with him I may not have fallen into this.

Finn is 2 and he's my laid back guy. I need to just get him a shirt that says 'hakuna matata' because it totally sums him up. I can already tell he's going to be the class clown, and while Grady will probably be on the safety patrol, Finn's the one he's going to have to watch out for!

Other than that I'm really sort of boring. I love to read and spend time with my family. I'm a total gleek, which I think stems from my history of musical theatre and dance growing up. I am super artistic but not at all crafty. People always comment that I must have great scrapbooks for my kids. Yeah, not so much! I am always in awe of the wonderful children's parties I see because I don't think I could ever dream up something so awesome.

I also just got to recently work with the Radio host Delilah this week, which was exciting for me. She's a bit of a guilty pleasure!

{Question} What do you love most about your career?

There's so many things I love. The fact that a new, nervous mama will so willingly hand over her precious week old bundle to me, and that I often get to spend my work week surrounded by that new baby smell. Gummy grins. Missing teeth. Bashful glances. Kids who keep me on my toes. Hugs at the end of my workday.Watching my clients go from that tiny little fresh baked loaf to a smiling, drooling, starry eyed little 9 month old with oodles of personality; and then seeing them grow until they are walking, running, and going off to school. It truly reminds me every day how quickly time flies and I am seriously so happy my clients entrust me with capturing the moments like these.

{Question} What are your plans for CVP in 2011, and what steps are you taking to achieve these goals?

 I am launching a new pricing model. The economy has hit a lot of people pretty hard and I am realistic in the fact that custom portraiture is a luxury. I am happy to now be offering more of a bottom line price structure, without compromising my down home customer service or touching images. This will also allow my clients to take home every digital file, so they don't have to let any go. I'm also really hoping to do a little traveling in 2011 and start offering mini sessions around the country.

Many, many thanks to Courtney for this candid, genuine and insightful interview (and stunning photos!)

You can find Courtney on her website here, blog here, or facebook here!

Meet Marie of Sweets Indeed {Exclusive Interview}

Have you heard of Sweets Indeed? They are an absolutely incredible sweet table design company based in Southern California, who offer high-quality sweets and incredible sweet table designs.

In addition to having enormous talent and creativity, Marie of Sweets Indeed is also a wonderful entrepreneur. She values the highest quality products for her clients, and takes each and every detail of her work very seriously.

Marie always comes across as incredibly thoughtful and genuine--I am highly honored to have the privilege of knowing her.

It brings me great joy to share with you a lovely interview I conducted with her not too long ago. Enjoy!

{Question} Please tell us how Sweets Indeed came from an idea to a full-blown business, and how it got to where it is today!

I grew up in a household where birthdays and achievements were a huge deal. My mom went all out when it came to making sure details were personalized and memories were made. I definitely got my creative craziness and love for party planning from her. My great grandma and grandmother were always baking, hence my love of all things sweet.

After my daughter was born, my life changed and I realized I had to be happy with my career. I had been in the medspa industry before and the thing I loved the most was customer service and making people happy. I also wanted to do something that still allowed me to be there for my kiddo. A 9-5 job was just not cutting it.

So...I started styling edible stations and used my friends and families as guinea pigs. About 2 years ago, I hit a point where it was either go legit or go home. Sweets Indeed became my official, full-time career in December of 2009. I am thrilled to be doing what I love and hope to leave a legacy that my daughter can be a part of.

{Question} You have created these fabulous sweet skewers. Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind them, and any hints at new designs we will see in 2011?

Kids are always playing with their food, twirling gum around their fingers, and leaving unwrapped lollipops around. My daughter would stick gummy rings and other candies over her fingers and make a gooey mess. I thought...there's got to be a better way to do this! So on a stick they went! I also wanted an edible treat that could be customized for any color palette or theme and was something unique for each event. We will be launching our online store that will host 6-8 different "ready to ship" Sweet Skewer styles and an option to completely customize your own. Of course, we'll be creating Holiday themes. Our Valentine Sweet Skewers are in our etsy shop now.

{Question} We would LOVE to get to know you better! Please tell us about yourself.

Here's some random facts about me.

-I have always enjoyed the customer service side of a business.

- I started as a veterinary technician (I practically had my own zoo growing up), worked at a German bakeshop, and am a licensed esthetician (not practicing anymore except to keep my eyebrows trim).

-I love to laugh and have quite a silly side.

-Disneyland is my home away from home.

- I'm into blues and greens and have been itching for another baby for quite some time now.

-I LOVE chocolate and baked goods. My favorites change constantly as I am always taste testing for quality assurance. Right now I'm a sucker for pistachio french macarons and vanilla bean cupcakes.

-I'm random.

{Question} You have designed some pretty incredible sweet tables, none of which don't have my jaw drop to the floor--they are so brilliantly creative and inspirational! How long, from the conception of the idea until the last dessert is placed on the table, is the process? I know that it can take hundreds and hundreds of hours, days, weeks, even months--that it is very deceiving, not as easy as it looks to get all those details just right!

This is a tough one because we've been put on many different deadlines. I'd say ideally, from consultation to final design, it takes about 2 months. We always have several projects going on so sometimes the lines get blurred. There's a lot of time spent in the creative process and I'm a sucker for the itty bitty details.

{Question} What are your goals for Sweets Indeed in 2011, and what steps have you already taken to get them accomplished?

 We have some exciting new ventures for 2011. Let's just say, we've been getting a lot of requests to travel and we are working on sending Sweets Indeed across the nation. We are blessed to have met and continue to meet amazing people in the industry. This business has also given us the opportunity to "give back" which is always something I knew I wanted to do. We will also be launching the charity portion of our business, "Sweets In Need". I am inspired, daily, by all the entrepreneurs and talent out there. This is a dream come true!

Thank you so much Marie, for this delightful interview! I cannot wait to learn more about what you have in store for us in 2011.
